This month, GenkiFIT in Smerthesdale is expanding its services to include Bar Pilates.
Unlike other forms of Pilates, barre incorporates aspects of ballet and is designed to improve balance and strength.
“The main difference between Bar Pilates and Mat Pilates is that they are a fusion of Pilates, ballet, and overall fitness,” says instructor Jamie Ellis.
“We use movements and terminology from ballet classes, local language, and a lot of what you would find in a regular Pilates class.
“It’s not a huge impact, but it’s a little bit more intense.”
Ms Ellis said this type of low-impact exercise could be particularly beneficial for people looking to get back into exercise.
“I think the different levels of impact were very appealing to older demographics and new mothers, but the range is still very wide,” she says.
“These are very appealing for people who didn’t think they could get back to exercise or who are a little hesitant about it.”
Last month, Ellis launched the Clavel-sized classes, which have been attended by more than 50 people, and said she has received great support from the community.
“It was absolutely insane,” she said.
“People see Pilates and dance and think, ‘I can do that too,’ so they’re overcoming new barriers to entry.”
Barre Pilates classes begin Thursday, May 9th and cost $5. Visit the GenkiFIT website to make a reservation.
