Preparing for a job interview
Dear Reader: Experts recommend practicing in front of a mirror before going to an interview so you know what your face looks like. You should have a positive facial expression. Frowning doesn’t make a good impression, so see how it affects your face. The interviewer will interpret your facial expressions as answers to the questions. — Eloise
Recipes are stored in the photo album
Dear Heloise: A few years ago I bought two mini photo albums at the dollar store and I use them as thematic holders for recipes.
One has everything you need for Christmas. Another has all your favorite sweet recipes. And another has your favorite savory recipes and tips. They all have different covers. It saves you time because you just pick up one and all your favorite recipes are in there. — G., via email
Homeowners Insurance
Dear Reader: Buying home insurance for the first time? You can start by asking family members for advice, but make sure you speak to a good, qualified agent to help you determine what you need to protect your home. — Heloise
Shoe Stick
Dear Heloise: New shoe boxes often come with a support rod. A great way to reuse these rods is to use them as supports for small flowers in your garden. Tie them with string or ribbon. — S.
Support your local animal shelter
Dear Reader: There are many ways to help out at your local animal shelter. You can donate old towels, comforters, and sheets. You can also volunteer to care for dogs and cats. When in doubt, contact the shelter and ask about other skills they need. — Eloise
Work Computer
Dear Reader: This is a reminder to be mindful of what you say and do on the computer when you use it for work. Do not forward jokes or comments about other employees. Most companies monitor the computers they provide to their employees, so these comments will be heard by your boss. — Eloise
When you lose your job
Dear Reader: If you’ve lost a job, experts say you should be prepared to talk about it in the interview. Explain the situation honestly — almost everyone has lost a job. Don’t get angry or negative about it. Talk about why you’re the best candidate for the new job. — Eloise
Pet Pal
Dear Heloise: Walter is a deceptively goofy 18-month-old pug. He sleeps all day, plays ball, and picks up balls all evening until he collapses in his kennel for a late-night frozen blueberry snack. He loves to go fishing and keep an eye on buckets of minnows. He’s dressed in a Harry Potter costume to commemorate a great day spent at Hogwarts with his grandkids. — Barbara Rainey, Park Rapids, Minnesota
