Check out the announcement from Sania Mirza:
Sania Mirza’s illustrious two-decade long tennis career came to an end on 21 February 2023 with her final match at the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships. Despite retiring from professional tennis, Sania continues to maintain her media presence through brand endorsements and reality TV appearances. Known for her aggressive baseline play and powerful groundstrokes, her forehand and volleying skills were her main strengths on the court.
On 7 January this year, Sania announced her decision to retire after playing her final match at the Dubai Championships in February. She started her season at the Adelaide International partnering Anna Danilina but unfortunately lost in three sets to top seeds Storm Hunter and Barbora Krejcikova.
At the Australian Open, Sania and Danilina entered as the eighth seeds. They won their first round match against Bernarda Pera and Darma Garfi in straight sets, but lost their second round match to Anhelina Kalinina and Alison van Uytvanck in three sets. This second round match was Sania’s final women’s doubles match at a major tournament. In the mixed doubles, she partnered Rohan Bopanna to reach the final, demonstrating her indomitable skill and fighting spirit.
At her final tournament in Dubai, Sania teamed up with Madison Keys to end her professional tennis career. Now as she moves from the tennis court to this very personal spiritual journey, Sania Mirza remains a beloved figure who inspires many with her humility, faith and dedication on and off the court.
