The project expresses spirituality through music, fusing soulful, jazz-inspired slow tempos with Azana’s soothing textures and diverse vocal range.
The title “KwaKhanya” translates to “There is Light” in both Zulu and Xhosa. The EP serves as a profound awakening to the power of God and our ancestors, emphasizing the ever-present presence of guardian angels in good and bad times.
Lead single “BOGOGO”, teased on social media, highlights the dangers of envy and jealousy of those around us, which is why seeking spiritual guidance and protection is paramount. The lyrics “Umona, umona, umona umona usuke eswele kufikeli hliziyo baze bapenduka abathakhathi” highlight the destructive nature of these emotions.
Speaking about the EP, Azana said: “KwaKhanya touches on themes of the creation of the earth, African beliefs, the drive to survive and thrive, and different experiences in love. Collaborating with Sam Deep was amazing as we both sought to tell his story with our instruments and my story with my voice and lyrics.” Azana’s role model, Lila, was a major influence on her artistic journey.
Sam Deep expressed his enthusiasm: “This project with Azana is something South Africans didn’t know they needed. We hope South Africans enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it and we look forward to seeing them singing it back on the road.”
“KwaKhanya” features producers such as Da Muziqal Chef, De Mthuda, Yumbs, Thabza Tee and Zar keys. This collaboration promises fans a unique fusion of styles, with each track reflecting the spiritual and emotional depth of the artists’ experiences and beliefs.
