Swimmer Michael Phelps will be a guest on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this weekend, where he continues to be candid about the challenges he’s had with his mental health and bouts of depression. Told. He spoke with Kristen Welker and talked about how FOX Sports football insider Jay Glazer is his “mental health friend.” This received a big response from former Chargers quarterback and current football analyst Ryan Leaf.
“Jay Glazer and I are both friends in mental health,” Phelps said. “We both go through similar ups and downs when we’re both struggling and we’re both having bad days. And we’re both depressed, if that makes sense.” We both had this conversation the other day, because when something like that happens to me, I contact him. And he reaches out to me. I’ve had some friendships like that where we really formed a bond.”
In response to a social media post about the interview, Leaf held nothing back and posted his thoughts about Glazer.
“When it comes to mental health and wellness matters, Glaser is a fraud,” Leaf wrote. “He uses it for his own benefit and doesn’t really invest unless it benefits him and his brand. Phelps is a source of inspiration, but I don’t think he’s that con artist. It makes me stop thinking about what is confusing my mind.”
Leaf has also been vocal about his struggles with depression, addiction, and suicide attempts. Leaf also spent 32 months in prison after violating the terms of his probation by breaking into a home to steal prescription drugs.
Back in 2018, a New York Post article talked about Leaf and Glazer collaborating on Glazer’s “Veterans and Players Fusion” (MVP) initiative.
Glazer, who was recently married and on his honeymoon, posted on his X account in response to Phelps’ interview: We save each other, hey! ”
Glazer has not yet commented on Leaf’s post. We will update this story if he responds.
