Are you struggling with long-term chronic pain…feeling older than your age? Dr. Lucas Brown, DAOM, LAc, of Rosedale Acupuncture and Wellness spoke to Studio 512 about helping people who need more than just symptom management.
Dr. Brown, you’ve been helping people for over a decade, and many of the symptoms you see are due to chronic illness.
“Well, we specialize in chronic pain. We want to help Austin residents get their lives back, instead of them having to take painkillers and live with the pain. So we see a lot of neuropathy, whether it’s idiopathic, diabetic or chemotherapy-related. Unfortunately, we also see a lot of failed back surgeries. We also see a lot of fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and more. Another big category of patients we see is women’s health issues. Anything that’s a chronic issue, we see.”
How does your treatment process differ from Western medicine?
“First of all, I want to make it clear that I love Western medicine. Western medicine is very helpful in emergency situations. There is nothing in the world that is better than Western medicine when it comes to saving lives. But the problem is that Western medicine Acute Care The model. The focus is on saving lives and addressing trauma. Applying this framework to functional or chronic illnesses only serves to mask symptoms.
“What often happens is that you take a medication, which causes another symptom or illness, and then you take another medication for that, which causes more side effects, and then you take another medication to treat the symptoms, and the cycle continues. I see patients coming into my practice who are on 10, 15, 20 different medications.
“The number one medication prescribed to neurological patients and other pain sufferers who come into my clinic is actually an anti-seizure drug, but many are surprised to learn that it actually just blurs everything in the brain and blurs the pain. Cause The pain can make people feel like zombies, change their mood, feel unwell, cause nausea, weight gain, memory loss, etc. Some people refuse to take medication to mask the symptoms, so they are in so much pain.
“What I do takes some time. It’s not a quick fix, but it’s a real solution. I address the symptoms that brought you to the clinic and what’s causing those symptoms.”
What would you say to those who are still skeptical?
“I understand – I’m a bit of a sceptic myself, but I’m even more skeptical of Western medicine when it comes to treating chronic illnesses and functional disorders. Acupuncture has been around for over 3,000 years and is the most widely used complementary medicine in the world. If it doesn’t work, it’s not going to last!”
“At Rosedale we take a very integrated, modern scientific approach, blending ancient acupuncture techniques with the latest therapeutic approaches. This is our secret weapon in treating conditions that leave other doctors scratching their heads, and what sets us apart from the acupuncture clinic down the street.”
If you have peripheral neuropathy and are seeking treatment, what steps should you take?
