According to Oreoluwa Sofolahan, jollof rice is a great introduction to Nigerian cuisine.
She is an international student at the University of Wisconsin Senior High School and is studying in advance. However, she took a break from her studies to cook classic African dishes.
“Jollof rice is a dish that is basically found in every Nigerian household. It’s like there’s no house that doesn’t have some kind of jollof rice in it. That’s why we have it at weddings, birthday parties, even funerals. ” she said. “Jollof rice is everywhere.”
Food is integral to her native culture. She described cooking as her love language.
“When someone comes to your house, they bring food with them. If you go to a wedding, they bring food with them,” Sofollahan said. “Well, my family’s refrigerator is full of food that we’ve eaten at various events.”
However, there is some “beef” (not the meat type) on top of the jollof rice.
“Countries that make jollof rice include Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Cameroon. So there will always be something like inner beef where jollof rice tastes better,” Sofollahan said. “I make Nigerian jollof, so people will say that Nigerian jollof tastes better because I make it.”
She shared the recipe so people could try it for themselves.
