Thank you for joining us at Celebrating Black Excellence. First, I want to thank you for your service. We are so grateful for all that you have done for this country. We are so grateful to you. How long have you been serving?
In total, he served 23 years: 11 on active duty and the rest in the reserves.
Now I want to ask you about your business, how did you go from serving in the military to now running your own business called Proliphic Career Services, how does that relate?
It ties into the structure and etiquette I learned from my time in the military. That’s where I actually did a lot of my training. I was also doing some career coaching behind the scenes, but I didn’t realize how good I was at it until I actually saw people coming to me for advice when they wanted to get out of the military and get a civilian job. So I was just giving them career advice. Then I separated myself from that and really started to realize that I was gifted at helping people be the best version of themselves in whatever way that might be.
So, what is the origin of your company’s name?
Actually, that was one of the things that popped into my head. The actual spelling is Prolificwhich just means an ever-growing plethora. But I always try to do something a little bit different. So I changed that “f” and put in a “ph” so that people know that what we’re doing is unique.
Tell us about the services you offer at Proliphic Career Services.
So we provide you with everything that will help you to make your career better: resumes, cover letters, interview skills and techniques, seminars, workshops, etc. And then we help you with the career coaching side of things. Once you get a job, we help you keep it and get promoted in your desired field. We also provide the mental coaching side, helping you to get out of your own way, because a lot of people don’t have the confidence that they need to pass an interview. So I help you dispel the clouds that get in your way, so that you can realize how great you are and express that in the interview.
Can you tell me a bit more about what happens in terms of spiritual coaching?
As CSRA’s only comprehensive career coaching service, we connect your spiritual side with the greatness within you so that it can shine through when you’re trying to find your dream job. Whether you’re embarking on a spiritual journey or trying to understand your own spiritual side, we help you understand each of your components so that you can become the best version of yourself and actually pursue what your heart desires.
So, what impact do you think your business has on the community?
First of all, I get a lot of questions about religion and spirituality because I touch on the spiritual side of things. I try not to touch on that topic because it’s a sensitive subject. I just tell people, I’m here to help you be the best version of yourself. When you think about it like that, it’s like opening another door for me because it’s a whole different approach to helping you find your dream career. Instead of just saying, “Send me your resume and I’ll give you your resume back,” I sit down and talk to you. I decide what’s best for you and then I talk to you about it and see if it’s best for you. Because I can’t speak for you in an interview. You have to. I can’t speak for you in the workplace. You have to. But in order for me to treat you as a customer, as a person and not as money, I need to sit down and get to know you one-on-one. Then I know what you’re trying to say. I can put it on paper and present it to you before you paint the picture. So that’s it. You are first and I am second. I’m here to serve.
Now, as an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business? Take your time. I say take your time because a lot of entrepreneurs want to get their LLC right away and know they are doing this business for some reason. They are in a hurry. They rush and they put all the money up front but they don’t really have the foundation. For example, you might have an LLC, a website, social media, but if you don’t have the foundation within yourself to represent your business, you are going to set yourself back. Because you’re not going to have good customer service, you’re not going to represent and speak well and you might lose as many clients as you could. So take your time. Focus on yourself too. Don’t just focus on wanting your business to thrive. A lot of people put money before people. If you put people first, the money will follow. But it’s just a side of how you treat people. Don’t treat people like money, treat them like people.
