KINGWOOD, W.Va. (WBOY) — Preston County residents raised nearly $8,000 for seniors while getting into the Easter spirit.
Preston County Senior Citizens, Inc. hosted a March for Meals event that included a walkathon, a fun run for kids, an Easter egg hunt, and more. All funds raised during the event will be donated to the Senior Nutrition Program, which provides meals at senior centers in addition to seniors’ homes.
According to Feeding America, more than 5 million seniors faced food insecurity in 2021. Factors such as health conditions, limited income, and transportation can make it difficult for older adults to receive adequate nutrition.
Walkers pledged to donate an amount of their choice for each lap they walked. The walkathon had raised about $8,000 by noon.
Tina Turner, who will soon become executive director of Preston County Senior Citizens Inc., said the company provides five meals a week to seniors. She also makes sure your diet includes proper nutrition according to the Older Adults Act nutritional guidelines. She points out that delivering meals directly to seniors’ homes is an added benefit.
“Sometimes the driver is the only person you see in a day,” Turner said. “In other words, it’s also a safety check.”
