New Delhi: If you experience problems with memory, attention, or concentration, Vitamin B12 deficiency Health experts said Monday that hyperthyroidism is equally dangerous.
According to a recent study published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, approximately one in four patients with hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism have vitamin B12 deficiency.
“Both hypothyroidism and vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to degeneration and accelerated age-related processes,” Dr M Wali, senior consultant, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told IANS.
“Hypothyroidism is often associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can also lead to cognitive impairment,” Dr Sudheer Kumar of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, said in a post on X.com.
Experts urged both vegetarians and non-vegetarians to monitor their vitamin B12 and thyroid levels.
Dr Wali said most of his recent cases have vitamin B12 deficiency.
“Hyperthyroidism can also lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Increased utilization of vitamin B12 can slow the process of nerve conduction and transmission of nerve impulses.
“In patients over 55 years of age, this process may be accelerated,” the doctor said.
Dr Wali called for increased vitamin B12 testing for patients over 55 years of age and for those found to be deficient to take medication “under supervision”.
“Keep your thyroid healthy and get it checked every three months,” he advised.
“People who present with memory problems or other cognitive impairments without any apparent cause should be screened for vitamin B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism,” Dr Sudheer added.
