NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday completed an unprecedented 45-hour meditation session on the tranquil shores of Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu as the Prime Minister was in the state on a spiritual visit.
He was meditating at Dhyan Mandapam, the place where revered Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda is believed to have had a divine vision of ‘Bharat Mata’.
This coincides with the end of voting in the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
The prime minister is known to undertake spiritual journeys at the end of election campaigns – in 2019 he visited Kedarnath and in 2014 he visited Shivaji’s Pratapagarh.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister performed ‘Surya Argya’ at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial at sunrise, officials said. PM Modi performed ‘Surya Argya’, a ritual related to spiritual practices that involves saluting the almighty God in the form of the sun.
The Prime Minister reportedly poured a little water from a small traditional beaker-like vessel into the ocean as an offering (argya) and prayed using prayer beads (japa mala).
Dressed in a saffron outfit, PM Modi offered flowers at the statue of Swami Vivekananda. He walked around the mandapam holding a ‘japa mala’.
Kanniyakumari is famous for its sunrise and sunset, and the monument is located on a small island near the coast. This is the southernmost point of India. Moreover, this is where the east and west coasts of India meet. It is also the meeting point of the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea.
According to mythology, Goddess Parvati also meditated on one leg at the same spot while waiting for Lord Shiva.
The Prime Minister began meditating at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial on May 30 evening and concluded it today.
Elections to India’s 543-seat lower house of parliament will be held in seven phases starting on April 19. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.
