One of the most prominent celestial events of the year, the Pink Moon, is just around the corner. Despite its name, the lunar wonder, his second full moon of spring, is not actually pink. April’s full moon will rise today, Tuesday, and will be visible until Thursday. His fourth full moon of the year marked the beginning of the Jewish holiday Passover, giving the event another name: “Passover Moon.”
This April’s first full moon will be in Scorpio, a water sign associated with intimacy, self-empowerment, vulnerability, rebirth, and sexuality. The full moon on April 23rd signifies a renewal of energy.
Here’s what we know about Pink Moon.
When is the Pink Moon in 2024?
This year’s celestial events aren’t just focused on the moon. Other celestial bodies such as Mars, Saturn, and Mercury are also displayed.
It will reach peak brightness at 7:49 p.m. EDT on April 23, but will be visible throughout Thursday morning, according to NASA. Other names for this event, depending on the culture, are Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish Moon, Pesach or Passover Moon, Hanuman Jayanti Festival Moon, Bak Poya, etc.

Additionally, in the Christian church calendar, the first full moon after the vernal equinox is called the Passover moon, which helps determine the date of Easter. This means that Easter follows the Sunday after the month of Passover/Easter. Easter 2024 has already taken place on March 24th, but in some cases it is the full moon of April that secures its title.
Why is it called Pink Moon?
NASA notes that in the 1930s, the Maine Farmer’s Almanac began listing Native American names for each month.
Following this calendar trend, April’s full moon became the Pink Moon, as the tribes of the northeastern United States called it. Their decision was inspired by moss pink/creeping phlox/moss phlox/mountain phlox, a wildflower herb native to the eastern United States that blooms earliest in spring. It has pink petals.
