During Mental Health Awareness Month, SPCA Tampa Bay points out the mental health benefits of being around animals and encourages people to adopt and volunteer.
LARGO, Fla. — Pinellas County Animal Shelter is commemorating National Mental Health Awareness Month with a new initiative that harnesses the power of animals to reduce stress in our lives and strengthen our mental health. is launching.
Largo-based SPCA Tampa Bay believes that the unconditional love and unwavering loyalty that animals provide is often the key to improving the mental health of many people.
And there’s science to back this up. Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown that interacting with animals increases the release of oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone.” This hormone plays an important role in reducing stress and promoting feelings of trust and bonding.
The simple act of petting a cat or playing fetch with a dog can also lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress.
In May this year, the SPCA is highlighting the benefits of animals for mental health in hopes of leading to more adoptions.
“We want people who adopt animals or spend time with animals to not only care for their own mental health, but also for the mental health of the animals here,” said SPCA Marketing Specialist Camille Hakenrider. “Shelters are really stressful environments, and we strongly recommend spending time in them.” Working together really benefits both humans and animals. ”
SPCA Tampa Bay also partners with the local police union, the Suncoast Police Benevolent Association, to implement the Adopt a Cop program, which assists law enforcement with pet adoption fees. There are similar programs for veterans.
“The sacrifices they have made are truly important and we want to honor them and make sure we provide them with the support they need,” Harkenrider said. “While they’re going through it or after they’re going through it.”
The SPCA said it is always looking for dedicated volunteers for those who are not in a position to adopt but would like to reap the mental health benefits of being around animals. .
