When Amina Arif Hutchinson took over Pilates Powerhouse in February 2023, her primary objective was to continue the legacy of previous owners Bonnie and Matt Nay.
“They wanted to entrust the company to someone they knew would take over the business and build a community,” Hutchinson said. “So what’s important to me is my community, my family, my health and my safety.”
Hutchinson hopes the studio will be a “one-stop shop” for health, recovery and self-care, she said.

Since February, she has renovated space at the Wellness Center in Pearland and expanded its services to include an esthetician who performs facials and beauty services. She added equipment for her personal training to the gym and created an area for her private Pilates sessions.
The center also offers massage services and stretching sessions, and has a small shop selling branded clothing and fitness equipment.

dig deeper
Guests must walk through a long, narrow gravel driveway to reach the Pilates Powerhouse, a converted home set on five acres of land.
Hutchinson said this helps guests slowly develop a self-care mindset.
“I think driving down a gravel road gives you an immediate feeling of reset,” she said. “I approach the building as if I’m preparing, whether it’s for my recovery, my health, or for myself.”

why is it important
Hutchinson said Pilates Powerhouse remained open during the renovation and ownership change to accommodate members ranging in age from 13 to 96.
“Studio veterans are very enthusiastic,” she said. “They don’t want to miss training.”
Hutchinson said these members’ dedication to an active lifestyle, despite their physical ailments and age, is an inspiration.
“I strongly believe that’s the community we’re building,” she said. “People who work on building their bodies throughout their lives.”
