Omega-3 fatty acids are important for our health, but our bodies cannot produce them naturally. The solution lies in food sources. To get omega-3, most people turn to fatty fish or fish oil supplements. However, during pregnancy, women are given a long list of what to eat and what to skip. Questions about eating fish or any kind of supplements during pregnancy are common. Therefore, some may wonder if it is safe to take omega-3 during pregnancy.

What are omega-3 fatty acids?

These fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat that is essential for our health. Your body cannot produce these, so you must get them from your diet. The main types of omega-3 fatty acids are:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) found in flaxseed oil, soybean oil, and canola oil.
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is found in fatty fish, fish oil, and seaweed.
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is found in fish oil and seaweed.

Sources of omega-3 fatty acids include:

1.Fish

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, you can eat fish two to three times a week during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Safe options for pregnant women include salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout. These fish are rich in EPA and DHA and low in mercury, which can harm the fetal nervous system.

2. Fish oil supplements

If your dietary intake of omega-3-rich fish is insufficient, fish oil supplements are a good alternative, but it’s important to choose a high-quality supplement that’s been tested for purity and the absence of contaminants, says obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Chetna Jain.

3. Algae oil supplement

For vegetarians and vegans, algae oil is a plant-based source of DHA and EPA. Algae oil is derived from seaweed and does not contain contaminants such as mercury.

4. Fortified foods

Want to add more omega-3-rich foods to your diet? Look for eggs, milk, and yogurt that are fortified with DHA. Helps increase your intake of omega-3s.

5. Plant sources

Plant sources such as flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, and hemp seeds are rich in ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), but are not as effective as direct sources of DHA and EPA. Although the body can convert ALA to DHA and EPA, this process is inefficient.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce complications such as preeclampsia, which is characterized by high blood pressure and damage to other organs such as the kidneys.
  • Omega-3s reduce the risk of prenatal and postnatal depression.
  • Pregnancy puts extra strain on the cardiovascular system, but omega-3s can help maintain heart health by reducing triglycerides, lowering blood pressure, and preventing blood clots.
  • Omega-3s may reduce pregnancy-related inflammation, benefiting both maternal and fetal health.

Because rapid development of a baby’s retina and nerves occurs primarily during the third trimester, omega-3 fatty acid supplements may be especially important during this time, according to a 2008 study published in Reviews in Obstetrics and Gynecology. It is said that there is.

The typical recommended dose of DHA during pregnancy is at least 200 to 300 mg per day, but the exact amount can vary depending on your individual needs and your doctor’s recommendations, experts say.

What are the side effects of omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are generally considered safe and beneficial for both pregnant women and their unborn babies. However, omega-3 fatty acids can have potential side effects.

1. Digestive problems

2. Blood becomes thinner

Omega-3 fatty acids have mild blood-thinning effects that can increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people taking blood thinners or with bleeding disorders, experts say.

3. Allergic reaction

Although rare, some women may experience an allergic reaction to fish oil supplements. Symptoms may include a rash and itching.

Additionally, fish oil supplements derived from contaminated fish may contain mercury. High levels of mercury can harm a developing baby’s nervous system. So choose high-quality, purified supplements from reliable sources, experts say. Taking very high doses of omega-3 supplements can cause excessive bleeding and affect immune function. It is important to strictly adhere to the dosage recommended by your doctor.
