Tri-County Meals on Wheel’s weekday dining programs often include lessons on a variety of nutrition topics. Seniors have the opportunity to learn about nutrients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and water while enjoying a healthy hot meal at the Palestine Senior Activity Center.
Nutrition classes help older adults cope with age-related declines, such as loss of muscle mass and bone density. Elderly people are also more susceptible to related diseases such as dehydration and kidney dysfunction.
Last week, seniors learned about vegetables as a source of protein, including leafy greens like collard greens, kale, and spinach, and root vegetables like carrots, onions, and potatoes.
Texas A&M AgriLife nutrition experts also conduct monthly nutrition classes on a variety of topics.
The weekday dining program is open to everyone as long as participants call ahead to reserve a space. Suggested donations are $3 per meal for those 60 and older and $6 for young adults.
