Alexandria, VA April 15, 2024 – Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) is pleased to announce the publication of the following books: Good news for church politics By the Rev. Ross Cain, Associate Professor of Theology, Ethics, and Culture at VTS.

He points out that people often think of politics in terms of privileged struggles for power, which they often associate with gridlock, dissatisfaction, and how little their voices matter. He observes that as we lead church communities, our obsession with national politics can paralyze us and lead us to emulate the tactics of this infuriating form of government.
Cain, who is also director of VTS’s doctoral program, argues that from social service to advocacy, congregations can instead practice politics in ways that embrace loving interdependence as members of the body of Christ. Cain’s research and teaching focus on the intersection of culture and moral decision-making, and the religious practices and teachings that enable the formation of communities of love and justice. In his first book, Syncretism and Christian Tradition: Race and Revelation in the Study of Religious Mixture (Oxford University Press, 2021) explores the lived experiences of religious communities, with a particular focus on the incorporation of new and unfamiliar expressions of faith and practice.
