Findings highlight the importance of northern soybeans and their nutritional value
Interestingly, almost half of the respondents in this study expressed their desire to consume 1 ton (MT) of extra digestible amino acids and energy in U.S. soybean meal compared to Brazilian and Argentine soybean meal. It became clear that they were willing to pay $5-10 more per item. (Stock photo via Alabama Extension, public domain)
MANKATO, Minn. — A recent survey conducted by Northern Soy Marketing (NSM) during the U.S. Soybean Quality Understanding Seminar held in Vietnam and Indonesia explores the opinions of traders and nutritionists on the key factors that determine soybean quality. It became clear that they were in agreement. The findings highlight the importance of northern soybeans and their nutritional value.
The survey results show that while crude protein levels remain an important factor, survey respondents also prioritize other quality indicators such as essential amino acids and energy levels. Interestingly, almost half of the respondents in this study expressed their desire to consume 1 ton (MT) of extra digestible amino acids and energy in U.S. soybean meal compared to Brazilian and Argentine soybean meal. It also became clear that people are willing to pay $5 to $10 more per item. This preference stems from the understanding that there is generally an inverse relationship between soybean crude protein levels and essential amino acid levels. Too much crude protein can cause a variety of problems, so soybeans and soybean meal, which have low levels of crude protein, tend to be high in essential amino acids, which is beneficial for livestock growth.
Dr. Robert Swick, NSM poultry nutrition consultant, said of poultry: “Excess crude protein causes increased water consumption, wet litter, and reduced carcass quality due to breast blisters and footpad lesions.”
NSM surveyed traders and livestock nutritionists during trade missions in Vietnam and Indonesia this winter. The purpose of these missions was to build relationships with international feed mill executives, buyers, and nutritionists to discuss the superior quality of U.S. soybeans and soybean meal.
