Community members came together Thursday to celebrate the newly completed pavilion project at the Chambers County Community Health and Wellness Center (CCCHWC).
The project, sponsored by a $15,000 grant from the Coosa Valley Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council, is a new addition to Lafayette’s Health and Wellness Center.
The pavilion will be used as an additional area for informational classes for local residents. RC&D representatives distributed plants and seeds from the pavilion throughout the day for local residents.
The CCCHC was created as a partnership between the Chambers County Commission, the City of Lafayette and Auburn University’s Rural Outreach Project. The center aims to address health disparities in rural areas by providing health and wellness information and resources.
Over the past year, the center has hosted multiple health screenings administered by Auburn University faculty and students, programming on health-related topics, and medical care through an on-site OnMed telemedicine station.
The Coosa Valley RC&D grant was awarded last year in partnership with the city and county for the expansion, and Coosa Valley RC&D Executive Director Ciara Turner also spoke at the event, saying, “We couldn’t do what we do without the help of our legislators.”
“Anytime we can give back to the community, we know it will be a worthwhile project that brings the community together,” Sen. Randy Price said. “…We enjoy helping out our rural communities.”
He added that the Lafayette project serves as a model for other health and wellness centers across the state.
Lafayette Street and Sanitation Department Superintendent George Green and his team worked from start to finish to complete the work in time for Thursday’s check presentation ceremony.
Green created the blueprints for the pavilion and then worked with his team to build it.
The check presentation ceremony was attended by many representatives, including Price, Turner, Congressman Bob Fincher and Chambers County Commission Chairman James Williams.
Other local city officials were also in attendance, including Lafayette City Councilman Tony Thomas.
