It’s an accomplishment Carla could never have imagined back in the 1990s, when she worked in a pharmacy surrounded by bottles of mysterious vitamins and herbs that were often dismissed as new-age products or alternative products. .
“I remember thinking, ‘We’ve been using these plants for thousands of years, so how can this be a new era?'” she said. “At the time, no one in the pharmacy knew about them.”
Carla completed a short course in naturopathic medicine, as there were no university-level courses offered at the time.
“This course has expanded my mind and love for plants, and has given me a deeper understanding of what I can do with plants for the people who come to the pharmacy,” she said. Ta.
At the turn of the century, Carla completed her undergraduate degree as the naturopathic sector was rapidly growing into a multi-billion dollar industry.
But it was her master’s research project and the opportunity to connect with industry leaders at Southern Cross University and other naturopathic doctors from across the country that had a dramatic impact on her as a practitioner.
Kara focused on naturopathic treatments for anxiety and depression and explored the use of psychobiotics, or probiotics, for mental health.
“This experience has completely changed me, and my clients will benefit too,” she said. “Previously, I was a solo practitioner and quite isolated. Since then, I have become more involved within the naturopathic community and with other health professionals.”
Carla also worked on a long-term COVID-19 research project with the World Federation of Naturopathic Medicine.
“It was just phenomenal! If I hadn’t gotten my master’s degree, I never would have found the global connections to work on such a large-scale project,” she said.
“If you’re thinking about competing in the Masters, take the first step,” she urged. “Southern Cross University is very supportive of big, great ideas and our lecturers just want you to succeed.”
