There are two reasons why I really enjoy Standard Pilates. First of all, it’s a welcome change from my usual fitness routine, which revolves around running and gym workouts. Secondly, I love the constant challenge that comes with being a beginner in the Pilates world, always learning new techniques and honing my movements.
I wanted to leave my best yoga mat at home for a day and try something a little different, so I tried an in-person class at STRONG Pilates Islington, a new Pilates studio offering classes using the innovative Rowformer machine. I jumped at the chance.
The Rowformer machine is half reformer and half rowing machine, creating a dynamic combination of rowing and Pilates. Provides a full-body workout that trains multiple muscle groups. This combination not only boosts cardiovascular health, but also strengthens muscle strength. It’s a particularly appealing option for those who find traditional Pilates a little slow-paced or monotonous, adding variety to their workouts and keeping them focused and motivated.
I had never experienced Reformer Pilates before trying the Rowformer class. So, even though I was completely new to using any type of machine in my Pilates practice, I was up for the challenge. Plus, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was dazzled by the fact that the class was held in a dimly lit studio in a chic basement. The kind you see on your favorite celebrities’ Instagram stories on Monday mornings.
I chose the Loaded Lower class offered by STRONG because I thought the lower body component would help strengthen my legs for my current marathon training. This session consists of a 45-minute aerobic workout using lowformers, heavy springs, and dumbbells under tension. STRONG also has the option of completing the cardio section on a bike instead of the Rowformer, but I chose the latter. I’ll explain what happened.
What is Lowformer Pilates?
Lowformer Pilates is a fitness approach that combines elements of traditional Pilates exercises with the use of specialized equipment known as a lowformer. This style of Pilates integrates rowing and reformer machines to create a hybrid workout experience.
A low-former Pilates class gives you the opportunity to work through a variety of exercises that target different muscle groups while emphasizing core strength, flexibility, and controlled movement. Incorporating rowing adds a cardiovascular element to your workout and improves your overall fitness.
Benefits of low-former Pilates
Pilates helps improve core strength, flexibility, and posture. Digging deeper into low-former Pilates adds a cardiovascular component.
Diana Coffey, STRONG’s Head of British Academy and Exercise and Master Instructor, said: ‘The cardiovascular aspects of rowing not only improve your heart health but also improve your overall endurance. Combining Pilates with aerobic training ensures a full-body workout and promotes joint health with low-impact exercises. ”
She also says that Rowformer Pilates can improve balance and coordination, which, when combined with the dynamic movement of rowing, improves overall body awareness and athleticism.
If you like low-impact but high-intensity workouts and don’t want to spend money on a gym or Pilates studio membership, joining a hybrid Rowformer Pilates studio may be the best option for you.
My first experience with the Rowformer Pilates class – my honest impressions
It was intense
Since I was completely new to this style of fitness class, I decided not to mess with the springs on the Rowformer machine and let it be set by the last person. I also got some dumbbells that are the same size that I usually use when working out my lower body at the gym.
However, I had no idea that I would be working at a significantly higher intensity in certain parts of the class. I’m more used to structured sets and reps, but STRONG’s Rowformer class focused on doing your best for set time intervals. It reminded me of the days of doing HIIT workouts in my living room during the various lockdowns of 2020. Even though I had much more technical equipment down this time.
It didn’t take long before I was sweating and my cheeks were red. She kindly reminded me of this throughout the 45 minute session as I was conveniently facing the mirror. I was impressed by how quickly I started feeling the effects of training my glutes and quads and could already feel my DOM approaching the next day.
my butt was on fire
Pilates seems to impart a unique aesthetic to its followers, especially online. It’s like a uniform with slicked back hair, matching workout crop top and leggings, and green juice in hand. While it’s definitely a very attractive look, it can be a bit intimidating, and fancy studios cater to a certain type of person, namely those who do Pilates for a show and not for the actual workout. I sometimes wonder if it attracts the type of person who isn’t too bothered. But a good Pilates class elegantly demonstrates the latter, and my experience with STRONG has made it clear that Rowformer Pilates is not for the faint of heart.
Moving from rowing to challenging lateral lunges against the machine’s formidable resistance, and then into split squats, turned out to be a killer workout for me. Halfway through the class, I strained, or should I say trembled, into a split squat, trying not to laugh at myself, anticipating what level of pain the instructor had in store for us next. I couldn’t stay. The next day, my glutes and quadriceps were definitely feeling the burn. Using escalators or elevators instead of stairs was non-negotiable.
It didn’t feel like regular Pilates.
I knew I wasn’t signing up for a standard Pilates class, but the atmosphere was definitely different than any Pilates I’ve ever experienced. Those accustomed to traditional Pilates classes, whether in-person or through the best workout apps, will appreciate the challenging yet often gentle nature of Pilates.
But in the low-former classes I attended, I was able to manage the rower’s settings, listen and absorb all the instructor’s instruction via microphone, and perform all the different movements with precision to target the right muscles. , I found myself feeling a little overwhelmed with avoiding muscles. Injury.
To be honest, I didn’t know that I would have the opportunity to arrive early and be introduced to the Rowformer machine and class. We highly recommend our introductory course for anyone interested in exploring new forms of Pilates, whether Reformer or Rowformer Pilates. Or feel free to request one. After all, the instructor is there to help you and make you feel comfortable.
Tried the Lowformer Pilates Class – Verdict
I experienced my first low-former based Pilates class completely blind. It felt very new, but it was physically demanding and required full concentration. I was glad to try something different and out of my comfort zone. The more you get used to the workout format and get better at it, I can definitely see it becoming addictive.
And if you think of yourself as a gym machine, we recommend you try a loaded lower body session if you have a high-powered studio nearby. Without having to worry about holding the boat handle with sweaty palms, you’re sure to reduce your gluteal and overall muscle stamina. As I said before, if you’re new to Pilates, don’t be afraid to ask for help and take advantage of our introductory or beginner sessions.
