My boyfriend never stops meditating!

my boyfriend says He must meditate for an hour every day. Why does this annoy me so much? He works in technology, if that’s relevant. – In search of enlightenment

Everyone looking for

I think that’s pretty obvious. On the other hand, meditation is the most self-centered and anti-social habit, at least of which she is one. (I can think of another very solitary act that some people claim they “must” do every day to stay sharp.) The motivation is usually personal productivity, sleep hacking, Things like increased creativity are brazenly selfish. On the other hand, it is also a spiritual practice, traditionally with ego death, self-transcendence, and ultimately universal enlightenment as the highest goal. Contradictions abound. It’s no wonder meditation is so popular in the tech industry. In this industry, constant efforts to expand market share are under the utopian language of connecting the world, removing human limitations, and making life unimaginably wonderful for all living things. It is often done.

Of course, I’m not saying you should tell him this. If your boyfriend is far enough along the path to enlightenment (God help him), then such “contradictions” are actually paradoxes, koans, and the highest form of spiritual truth. He would point out that. The dualistic mind is clouded by a kind of binary logic thinking that cannot yet glimpse the higher dimension where all 0s are 1s at the same time and apparent hypocrisy is integrated into a unified truth. I am. I’m sure you’ve all taken this lecture before, and while it’s tedious, he’s not completely wrong. We waste much of our lives resolving the frictions and logical conflicts that make the world meaningful in the first place. The beauty of a rose requires thorns. This bug is actually a feature. The shortcomings of our loved ones are, after all, inseparable from their strengths.

So be thankful your boyfriend hasn’t evolved enough to avoid all the contradictions yet. The only people more troublesome than human contradictions are those who successfully overcome them.

I don’t mind when my friends ask me to take a picture, but why do I want to scream when my beloved mom takes my picture? —Brat

This question may actually be beyond my pay grade, Brat. Some psychotherapists say that every photograph is an act of acquisition, that the photographer is trying to possess, to capture, to freeze, and that the joyful mother who clicks the shutter is an archetype of the Oedipal mother. I would say it embodies it. Devour your own children. Perhaps your hostility stems from confusing the camera with your mother’s gaze, an ever-present eye that threatens to erase your own perspective. Or maybe it’s the violent words in the photo (take a photo, capture), on an unconscious level, evokes sublimated aggression in the mother-infant relationship, which must be suppressed in order to maintain a viable family life.

Perhaps these explanations are not very convincing. Neither do I. The truth is, you can probably list dozens of actions, including asking about your day, checking on your health, and buying you an unsolicited gift. They operate according to the same double standards. It’s not a problem if it’s a friend, but if it’s a parent, it’s very annoying. The problem has nothing to do with photography and everything to do with proximity. It’s easy to hate your mother. Because she is your mother, an all-rounder of love and support whose sole purpose is to be thoroughly attentive to your needs and sensitive to what irritates you. . It’s easy to forget that she’s also an autonomous being, perhaps late in her life, just trying to record in some small way the fleeting moments of happiness that seem to pass by faster and faster each year.
