Enam
Ghanaian female singer, Enam, has declared that most songs released by artistes these days are inspiring and have no spiritual meaning.
Enam, who recently released the single “Libation,” believes music is one of the best tools to foster relationships of all kinds.
“Music touches something deep within us, something we might call spirituality,” she said in an interview. “And this connection can have a profound effect on our lives.”
Known for her Afro-spiritual sound, Enam draws inspiration from Hajivodusi, the song goddess of Ghana’s Volta Region.
“Music can either uplift or harm our consciousness,” she explains, adding, “I think some artists prioritize rhythm and danceability over the spiritual aspects of music.”
Enam’s mission is to revive interest in the spiritual resonance of traditional Ghanaian music.
Her recent EP featuring highlife artiste Akwaboah and her new single “Libation” with accompanying visuals all exemplify this pursuit.
“There’s so much wisdom in Ghanaian music, especially indigenous practices. Everything has meaning and purpose,” she added.
Enam’s comments have sparked debate about the role of music in Ghanaian society, with some welcoming her call for a return to spiritual connection while others debate the definition of spirituality in contemporary music.
“I see music as a medium for the spiritual life. Music has become so much a part of everyday life that I feel most songs lack spirituality.”
“Some artists only care about the rhythmic aspects of the music and how danceable it is, and forget about the spiritual aspects,” Enam says.
The singer further stated that his aim in pursuing the Afro-spiritual genre is to allow people to feel the indigenous spirituality of Ghana, which was one of his reasons for pursuing a career in music.
Her new song, “Libation,” is accompanied by mesmerizing video that evokes a sense of oneness with the earth and water, and at its core, is a sense of spirituality and oneness with the world we live in.
