Caipirinha would not exist without the millions of Africans who toiled under harsh conditions on the country’s sugar cane farms to produce the basis of Brazil’s precious distilled spirit, cachaça. Renowned New York chef and Rio de Janeiro native Junior Borges has created a beautiful, refreshing cocktail by adding strawberries mixed with Meyer lemon juice to this classic drink.

The recipe below is for a single drink, but you can easily increase the amount of ingredients for a large group by switching from shaking to stirring and filling the pitcher with drinks. Fresh, fruity and with lovely chunks of berries, it’s the perfect cocktail to kick off summer.

  • Is cachaça the same as rum?

    Cachaça is more than just a distilled spirit made from fresh sugar cane juice, it is an important part of Brazilian culture. Rum, on the other hand, is made from molasses, a byproduct of crystallized sugar obtained from sugarcane juice. Despite only recently becoming popular in the United States, cachaça is the third most produced spirit in the world (after vodka and rum).

  • What are the characteristics of Meyer lemons?

    At first glance, you can see that Meyer lemons look nothing like regular Eureka lemons. In comparison, Meyer lemons are much smaller and have golden yellow skins. When you cut it, it smells like perfume. The gentle floral scent just gives you a preview of what it will taste like. Meyer lemons are sweeter and less acidic than the lemons sold year-round at grocery stores, making them popular for baking and cocktail making.
