This month we focus on the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. If you don’t know what work-life balance is, let’s start by defining the term.

The term “work-life balance” simply refers to the act of maintaining healthy boundaries between work and personal life. While this may seem like an easy task to some, many adults struggle with this concept. Many of us are unable to prevent our professional lives from interfering with our personal lives and vice versa. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just about being “overworked” or not having enough hours in the day. Similarly, our personal lives often overshadow our professional lives in unhealthy ways.

Most of us don’t feel fulfilled only when we’re at home or at work. If we don’t address this, we end up feeling overwhelmed in both areas, and our work and home experiences end up being less fulfilling than they could be. In a survey conducted by HRD (Human Resources Director), 7 out of 10 working adults reported that they were unable to separate the two and suffered from burnout. This is dangerous because it presents a distorted version of reality and is impossible to maintain in the long term without negative and sometimes irreversible consequences.

Work burnout occurs when an individual is unable to differentiate between work and personal life, resulting in what feels like an unmanageable workload. As a result, they often feel depressed in their personal lives as well. Similarly, some people experience disruption in their personal lives that spills over into their professional lives, resulting in poor performance at work and strained relationships with colleagues, employers, and employees.

If this was a challenge before the pandemic, it has become even more challenging since remote work became a reality for large swathes of the population. While remote work has many benefits, it often blurs the line between work and personal life. While the convenience of remote work offers us the opportunity to complete professional tasks from home, it can also make it difficult to distinguish between what we need to do at work and what we need to focus on at home. there is. Convenience is necessary, but it can also compromise your ability to take off your “professional hat” and properly focus on your family, personal life, and self-care. Replying to “his last email” or attending to “one more thing” during off-hours at work may seem harmless, but these instances tend to stack up. , has an erratic impact on our roles both at work and at home. .

If you’re not sure if you’re managing your work-life balance, ask yourself these five questions:

When was the last time you felt happy in your life? Professionally or personally?

If you can’t remember a time when you felt joy in your daily activities, it may be because you’re struggling to find the balance you need. When we have a good work-life balance, we are more likely to find fulfillment and joy in all areas of our lives.

Do you still feel tired no matter how much sleep you get?

Pushing yourself too hard mentally in either area can lead to chronic fatigue. Many people don’t realize how much physical damage this kind of mental fatigue can do to our bodies and physical health. It is very important to monitor this and make adjustments accordingly.

Do you often feel overwhelmed?

If you find yourself unable to complete basic tasks at work or feel anxious about dropping the ball at home because of what’s going on in your personal life, it may be a sign of the balance you need to feel. This may be due to the fact that it is not installed. I am successful in both areas. A healthy work-life balance allows you to set and achieve clear goals in both your work and personal life, even when times are more stressful than usual. If the slightest signs of disruption are affecting us negatively, it’s time to address the problem and make some drastic changes.

When was the last time you were able to truly put down your phone and focus on other activities without it?

If you find yourself constantly glued to messages or phone calls coming through your screen, it may be because you can’t find peace in leaving them behind for long to enjoy other activities. This is a clear sign of excessive focus on work and lack of personal life. Or maybe you’re using your phone to distract yourself from both your personal and work life. Sometimes it’s easier to try to ignore both, and many of us use things like social media and mindless scrolling to distract ourselves from bigger issues.

Do you feel like no matter what you do, it’s never enough?

If you are struggling to feel fulfilled at work or at home, it may be because you are too thin in one or both areas. It’s important to remember that every time you say “yes” to one thing, you need to say “no” to something else. It’s not realistic to say “yes” to everything you’re asked. Prioritizing which things to say “yes” to is difficult for many people, and when we don’t do it well, we feel inadequate in many areas and in our lives, leading to anxiety, stress, and even more. can lead to an increase in depression.

If any of these questions apply to you after reading this article, it’s time to dig deeper and find out what’s at the root of the problem.

If you feel like you need help dealing with these questions and how to deal with them, consider seeing a therapist who can help you with that. Contact us today to schedule a new patient appointment or match us with the therapist who’s right for you.
