Orlando, Florida – On this week’s “Black Men Sundays,” host Corey Murray interviews Caitlin McDonald, a licensed clinical mental health counselor and certified supervisor of mental health counselor interns.
McDonald is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a well-known therapy for treating post-traumatic stress disorder, and works in private practice with children, teens and their families.
“Therapy helps people deal with past events that may have been stressful, very overwhelming or traumatic. We work through some of those experiences in a very safe and comfortable environment in the therapy room so that individuals can heal from past wounds and move forward into the future, living a more successful and well-adjusted lifestyle in the present,” she said.

McDonald said she became interested in medical mental health counseling from a personal perspective while she was a student at the University of Florida, as she had a friend who others often turned to for advice.
“Health is so much bigger than the body, it’s about the mind, how you see yourself and how you look after yourself. Wellness is so important, and very recent research has shown that just by opening up and connecting with yourself and getting to know yourself, you can be able to deal with any challenge you may face in life. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, family issues or your own personal struggles, it’s important to have a safe place to talk about those issues and get support,” she said.
McDonald is also the coordinator for the CHILL program (aka Community Support and Intervention in Life Lessons), which provides individual and group counseling at Winter Park Middle School.
“We provide individual, family and group counseling at no cost to students. We’ve been working in these communities, in these schools, for 20 to 30 years with licensed therapists on campus to support students, parents and teachers,” she said. “It’s a program that I love and have seen what a huge impact it has on children and families in the area.”
On Tuesday, July 9th, from 4pm to 6pm, the CHILL program and Winter Park Health Foundation will host a family fun evening at the Center for Health & Wellbeing on Mizell Avenue.
“It’s a great, fun, indoor program, lots of games and activities, a fun place for families to get out of the house, socialize a little bit, check in on themselves, learn how to take care of themselves a little better and just socialize with their families,” she said.
