PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) – The Oregon Health Authority is recognizing May’s Mental Health Awareness Month by promoting resources that support the mental health of all Oregonians.

National statistics show that one in five people will experience a mental health condition in any given year, and about half of all Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives.

Almost everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health and emotional well-being.

“Too many people in our state face mental health issues, and we want everyone to know they don’t have to struggle alone,” said OHA Director Sejal Hati, MD, MBA. said.

Speaking about his own approach to mental health, Dr Hattie added: Mental Health Awareness Month is an important opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health. teeth health. “

Here are some highlights of the resources available to Oregonians.

  • OHA supports community mental health programs that provide services related to mental health, substance use, and gambling problems in counties and communities across Oregon. A directory of these services is listed by county.
  • In Oregon, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The easy-to-remember 988 number is available to people experiencing any type of mental health issue, substance use crisis, or thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Anyone who needs support can call, email, or chat in English and Spanish (interpretation services and American Sign Language are also available) to connect with a trained crisis counselor. 988 Lifeline is also a resource for friends and family who are worried about a loved one.
  • The Mental Health Toolkit was created in collaboration with OHA and the Oregon Department of Education to help educators improve student academic performance by meeting their students’ mental and behavioral health needs.
  • Sources on Strength Online Resources – Sources of Strength has two online resource packets. The first is a resource for practicing strength at home, and the second is a shorter version that also provides a wellness plan. Any of the resources in these packets can be used in the classroom, staff meetings, individual or group counseling, or for strength training wherever you are.

OHA encourages communities, organizations, and individuals to use the month of May to raise awareness about mental health and well-being.
