May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to discuss mental illness and the stigma that surrounds mental health disorders. Mental illness can affect individuals of all ages, races, and income levels. Each year, one in five adults in the United States experience a mental health disorder. One of the most common mental health disorders is major depressive disorder (MDD). This may include symptoms such as feeling depressed or hopeless, lack of energy, decreased motivation, loss of interest in hobbies or activities you previously enjoyed, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes. sleep and appetite. Another common mental health disorder is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This includes symptoms of anxiety such as irritability or restlessness, difficulty controlling worries, a sense of impending doom, difficulty concentrating or sleeping, and an upset stomach. Symptoms of mental health disorders can affect a person’s ability to fully participate in daily life and enjoy time with family, friends, work, school, and hobbies.
Life experiences and biological factors can contribute to mental health disorders. However, a mental illness can be present even in the absence of specific triggers. The impact of mental illness goes beyond the individual suffering from it. Family members, friends, co-workers and other people in the community may also be affected. Treatments often recommended for mental health disorders include medication management and counseling services, but treatment is individualized and your health care provider may be able to recommend options. Mental health resources are available in our community, including inpatient behavioral health care, psychiatric services, psychological services, and counseling services.
We can all raise awareness of mental health issues by supporting mental health awareness events, talking openly about mental health issues, and showing compassion for people suffering from mental illness.
