Recent articles from sister publications Cater sauce The magazine discussed the importance of integrating mental health into business strategy. Author Chef Jeffrey Schlissel writes:
“As a child, my parents always taught me that there are two things you should never talk about: religion and politics. Interestingly, these two topics still come up a lot. I am.
But what we never mentioned or talked about was mental health. Now, note: These two words usually don’t start with a capital letter, but I think they should.
Let’s go back to 2018, specifically June 8, 2018. If you don’t remember that date, it’s the day Chef Anthony Bourdain committed suicide. Later that same year, the American Culinary Federation held a competition to shine a spotlight on mental health. The conversation started that day.
During that competition, a chef I had just met broke down in tears across the table. At first I thought it was about Bourdain. He then told me very clearly why he was so disappointed. He looked me straight in the eye and said, “I tried to kill myself, but this amazing woman next to me, my wife, saved my life!” If I don’t get your attention, I don’t know what will. I grabbed the microphone and said it was time to shine a spotlight on the pink elephant in the room. ”
