MACON, Ga. (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon Mental Health Matters has expanded its monthly Wellness Weekend event. The new event, “Tea in Tees,” is women-only and will be held at Chic Culture in downtown Macon. This is an event where women can come together and talk about their feelings while drinking tea in a safe space.
Chic Culture owner Jameis Terry and the boutique’s fashion designer Ashley Wilson developed the concept. Terry says the lack of a community for women inspired the event.
“We started talking about how sometimes we don’t even feel comfortable talking to each other on the sidewalk,” she said. “So we wanted to find out why and create a space to figure out why. What is it that sustains us from within?”
Ashley Wilson says the event will boost the way women look and feel.
“When you look good, you feel good,” she said. “Sometimes you just need to take time for self-care.”
When Andrea Cook, project director for the Macon Mental Health Matters Initiative, heard about this new idea, she was excited. She hopes women will see this as an easy way to get the services they want.
“There is no judgment,” she said. “Women are the most frequent attendees of Weekend Wellness events, and we hope this will encourage more people to take full advantage of this resource.”
The event will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to all.
If you’re interested in the rest of the weekend’s events, there’s yoga in the plaza scheduled for Friday, a pop-up gym on Saturday, and a healing hike on Sunday.
Terry hopes this event will be transformative for the community.
“It really changes the community within our women’s community,” Terry said. “And in the family too. When mom gets better, everyone else gets better too.”
