They just moved into a beautiful new space on Grand Avenue and are owned by Rachel Hemphill.
Lisa: Are you a second generation Oakland resident and business owner?
Rachel: Yes, that’s right. My grandparents owned several grocery stores in Oakland, and my grandfather was a real estate agent in Lakeshore.
Lisa: You just had a big grand opening?

Rachel: Yeah. So I had the unique privilege of working with an architect to design the space. The clinic, which incorporates feng shui, held its grand opening with a traditional lion dance. It acts as a blessing to bring wealth and prosperity to the space.
Lisa: Tell us about the business you started here at City Pulse Acupuncture.
Rachel: So City Pulse Acupuncture is a multidisciplinary acupuncture health clinic that specializes in fertility, women’s health, and prenatal care.
Lisa: What made you decide to specialize in infertility treatment?
Rachel: That’s a great question. I feel like that’s what actually chose me. When I was in acupuncture school, I interned with a woman who was very well known for her infertility treatment in the city, and the rest is truly history.
On my wall I have photos of all my patients who have had children thanks to acupuncture and Chinese medicine. So I’ve been practicing for 14 years and I try not to count. I always try to stay humble because this is not my problem. That is a testament to the power of medicine. But by the end of the year he should have 1,000 babies born.

Lisa: How did you become interested in Chinese medicine?
Rachel: So I’ve always been interested in Chinese medicine. I grew up with a grandmother who would make traditional soups to relieve coughs and phlegm depending on the season, including winter melon. I also had a great aunt in China who was an acupuncturist.

Lisa: So besides people who are looking for help with infertility, who else do you treat?
Rachel: I also have an additional specialty in cosmetic acupuncture.
