DeJon Handy, owner of Gus Handy LLC in Beaumont, has been practicing meditation for more than five years.

“I started meditating when I was 22 years old because I was struggling to deal with the stress of being a young adult and finding my path in life,” he said. “There was a lot of anxiety and uncertainty that came with starting out on my own, and meditation helped ease some of that stress.”

Now 28 years old, Handy decided to offer free mediation classes to help those who needed a break from daily stress. Classes are held on Mondays at 7pm at Dharma Wellness MedSpa in Beaumont.

“Classes are dynamic and adapt to the needs of participants,” says Handy. “If someone wants to focus more on their breathing one week and more on their mental health the next week, we’re happy to take any type of class that suits their needs.

“I want to give everyone time to settle in and get comfortable before we get into the practice and breathing exercises. I want the first 10 to 15 minutes of class to be a safe space for everyone to socialize and focus on the course. I think.”

Once everyone has found a comfortable spot in the meditation room, the class begins.

“I start by asking everyone to build a box in their head,” Handy said. “I put all my daily stressors in this box so I can focus on myself. Once everyone has visualized creating their own box and putting all their stressors in it, I start meditating. can do.”

Handy said he believes his course is more than just a typical meditation class.

“I teach people a holistic approach to learning and practicing spiritual strategies and techniques that benefit someone in a variety of ways,” he said.

Ryland Sipes has been attending the sessions since the beginning and said he has noticed a noticeable change in his mood and anxiety levels. ”

“I started attending when I heard the classes were free. I have no regrets,” Sipes said. “I used to have trouble controlling my anxiety and anxiety when I was out in public, but I found that when I found myself in such a situation, I just defaulted back to the breathing techniques I learned in class and it calmed me down. Ta.”

Handy said participants will experience benefits such as reduced stress, improved concentration, improved sleep habits and reduced anxiety.

“I would encourage anyone who joins this class, or is considering joining, to do so with an open and creative mind,” he said. “Whatever you give to the class, you get out of it, so being open and actively listening will benefit any participant in the future.”

Dharma Wellness MedSpa is located at 2684 Calder Ave. in Beaumont. Walk-ins are welcome and admission is free, but donations are also welcome.
