As a parent of two elementary-aged children living in Oak Bay, I am very concerned about the potential reduction in District 61’s funding for school counselors at Margaret Jenkins Elementary School and Willows Elementary School.
The proposed cuts to funding for school counselors come at a time when children need support more than ever. The ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated mental health issues among young people, with many experiencing increased levels of stress and anxiety.
We are currently in a mental health crisis. Doctors in our region are reporting a significant increase in the number of children being diagnosed with mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety, and families are suffering.
Now, more than ever, we must prioritize children’s mental health and well-being by ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
Margaret Jenkins School and Willows School are community hubs where children come to learn, grow and discover their potential. Cutting funding for school counselors would undermine schools’ fundamental mission of fostering the holistic development of all children. This sends a message that their mental health is not a priority, which is unacceptable and short-sighted.
As parents, we must come together to voice our concerns and advocate for the needs of our children. We cannot stand idly by as schools are stripped of essential services, leaving children vulnerable and unsupported.
I call on my fellow parents, community members, and elected officials to vote against proposed funding cuts to school counselors at Margaret Jenkins and Willows schools.
