In the chaotic and ever-changing landscape of the music industry, Lenny Kravitz stands out not only for his timeless charm and musical talent, but also for his unique lifestyle choices that blend rock star bravado with deeply personal spiritual beliefs. Having turned 60 last week, he revealed in media interviews that he has remained single for over a decade, a decision he describes as “spiritual.”
The revelation may come as a surprise to many, given his previous image as a quintessential rock idol known for his dynamic relationships and charismatic presence. While Kravitz’s declaration of singlehood is nothing new, the depth of his decision is.
“Yes, it’s a spiritual thing,” Kravitz, a four-time Grammy winner, told The Guardian in an exclusive interview.
He now wants to be in a relationship but thinks it might be a struggle: “I’m very set in my ways and the way I live my life.”
Kravitz has been known to have dated several celebrities in the past, most notably from his marriage to actress Lisa Bonet, with whom he has a daughter, Zoe Kravitz, but since their divorce he has been rumored to have been romantically linked to several other celebrities, including Vanessa Paradis, Adriana Lima, and Nicole Kidman.
This shift to celibacy seems consistent with his long-standing search for meaning, purpose and spiritual connection.
“I really try to follow Christ’s example and not just go through this life glossing over it,” Kravitz previously told The Telegraph in an interview.
Similarly, in a 2008 interview with CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” Kravitz said, “In the end, [being celibate]”They’re helping me find the right person.”
“So I’m steadfast on that,” the rocker said at the time. “It’s a promise I made to God three years ago.”
Kravitz has reflected on the nature of his fame and career, telling The Guardian that he’s never considered himself “gorgeous.”
“No, not at all. I’ve never thought that way, and I still don’t. … I’ve grown to accept myself and feel good about myself, but I’ve never been that person who looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘Oh my God, look at you! You’re so beautiful.’ Especially not as a teenager. Absolutely not.”
Kravitz is keenly aware of the fleeting nature of celebrity and the deeper, more enduring aspects of life that fame does not reach, reflected in his songs “The Other Side” and “I Don’t Want to Be a Star.”
The lyrics to “The Other Side” are: “Where do I live/Where’s my wife/I’m all alone/Is life worth living/Where am I going, what am I looking at/Where are my kids fighting/Call my name and let me kiss my wounds/I’m just a man on the run/It’s a boring thing/So daddy tell me one more time/Dad tell me one more time I’m alive/Till I see you on the other side one day.”
In “I Don’t Want to Be a Star,” he writes, “Thoughts racing through my head/Too many girls, they all start looking the same/Too many choices, no time to choose/Too many clothes, too many shoes/I’ve turned the world upside down/I’ve played a part, I’ve been a clown/Now it’s my time, a brand new day/To be myself in a different way/I don’t want to be a star.”
Kravitz is known for his discipline, not only in his spiritual life but also in his physical and professional life.
At 60, he boasts a physique that would be the envy of many half his age, which he attributes to rigorous self-care and discipline. “It’s all about body, mind and spirit. I want all three to be in harmony,” he told The Guardian. “If your body is healthy but your mind and spirit aren’t healthy, then it’s just something to look good on and show off. Who cares? For me, everything has to be in harmony, and I have to put in the effort necessary to make it all in harmony so that I can live out the best of my being.”
This includes late night gym sessions and a clean eating diet that avoids junk food even in the toughest of circumstances.
Kravitz remains an influential figure in the music industry, despite the staidness that his lifestyle choices might suggest. His latest album, Blue lightreflects his enduring talent and eclectic musical style, which has earned him comparisons to legendary musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.
