- To prepare this recipe ahead of time, pour the pastry cream into an airtight container and place plastic wrap or buttered parchment paper directly on top. It can be refrigerated this way for up to 3 days. The assembled trifle can also be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
- If you like to retain the texture of the lemon zest in your pastry cream, there is no need to strain it.
- If you don’t have bottled syrup, you can make a small amount to use in this recipe. Place 1½ tablespoons sugar and 3 tablespoons water in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for about 1 minute until bubbles appear and the sugar is dissolved. Measure out 2 tablespoons for the recipe and discard the rest.
