Ayurveda Ayurveda is an ancient medical system from the Indian subcontinent, combining the Sanskrit words “ayus” (life) and “veda” (science). Ayurveda uses herbs to maintain health and is mentioned in ancient texts such as the Charaka Samhita, composed around 1000 BCE. Ayurveda recognises three bodily states: Vata (air and ether), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Ayurveda recognises the interdependence of the body, mind and spirit and emphasises a holistic approach to restoring balance, which is important for overall health. Incorporating Ayurvedic solutions into your dental care can improve gum health and overall wellness.

How does Ayurveda improve gum health?

According to Ayurveda, the oral cavity is one of the nine pores of the body. This means that these openings accumulate pollutants from secretions throughout the day and night. That is why Ayurveda recommends cleaning these openings frequently and regularly. The oral cavity is the main entry point to the body and needs to be maintained in good condition to protect it from potential threats to your overall health. Moreover, since digestion begins through the mouth, keeping it clean and fresh is extremely important.

Ayurvedic Practices to Improve Gum Health

• Use a soft bristled toothbrush or a neem/miswak twig twice a day to remove plaque, prevent cavities and keep your smile bright.

• Tongue scraping (Jihwa Nirlekhana): A metal or wooden branch scraper is used to activate reflex points, reduce bad breath, improve taste and stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes.

• Gargling (Gandusha and Kavala): Gargling with medicinal liquids reduces bad breath, bleeding gums and tooth decay. Gargling with Kavala Grahas increases oral strength.

• Chewing betel (tambula sevana), a combination of betel leaves, ground nuts and spices, improves breath odor, cleanses dental secretions and aids digestion.

Ayurvedic Herbs and Ingredients for Gum Care

Ayurveda uses a variety of herbs to improve gum health. These natural remedies have been used for generations to prevent and treat periodontal disease. Here are six Ayurvedic herbs and ingredients that are often recommended for gum care:

1. Miswak: A traditional chewing stick known to reduce plaque, fight periodontal disease and strengthen gums. The gentle bristles massage the gums, increase blood circulation and freshen breath naturally.

2. Neem is a powerful Ayurvedic herb with antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Neem twigs act as a natural toothbrush, improving gum health and reducing dental problems.

3. Triphala is an Ayurvedic mix of three fruits whose astringent properties help prevent tooth decay, strengthen gums and promote oral hygiene.

4. Pomegranate: Rich in antioxidants and antibacterial substances, it fights bacteria, reduces plaque, prevents bleeding gums and promotes gum health.

5. Irimeda: Its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties help minimize gum inflammation and enhance gum health.

6. Babool: Has antibacterial properties and reduces gum bleeding, inflammation and discomfort caused by gum disease.

These natural compounds present in toothpaste help in managing teeth and gum problems effectively. Neem and Triphala are common substances used to treat teeth related diseases (Dantagata Roga). Ingredients like neem, pomegranate and tumbul are very effective in treating gum disorders (Danta Moolaghata Roga).

Incorporate the wisdom of Ayurveda into your daily dental care routine to improve gum health and overall wellness. Incorporating Ayurvedic methods and natural products like neem, triphala and pomegranate into your dental care routine can significantly reduce gum problems. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare professional to develop an approach that’s right for you and maximize the benefits of Ayurveda for optimal gum health.
