The Lagos State Government has advised women to prioritise good nutrition.
According to a statement on Monday, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Cecilia Dada, made the remarks during a programme of the ministry titled, “Ounje Lore Awo”, held at the Onisabe Family Palace, Igbobi Sabe, Yaba, Lagos State.
She warned about the health risks associated with malnutrition and stressed that the state government is working to stem the tide.
Dada advised women to maintain a proper balanced diet to improve their health.
“This is intended to be implemented in all states of the federation as a Federal Government initiative to address malnutrition and nutrition-related issues in Nigeria.”
“The food we eat provides the nutrients our bodies need to function. Without a proper diet, we are more susceptible to disease and our bodies will not perform at their optimum capacity.”
“The justification for good nutrition is undeniable as the ministry has been involved in the process of spreading quality food and nutrition programmes in Nigeria,” she said.
She encouraged women to eat right, get regular health checkups and exercise regularly.
“Proper nutrition is essential for physical, mental and emotional health. The importance of eating right cannot be overstated,” she said.
During the programme, the ministry, with support from the Ministry of Health, provided free medical check-ups for cervical and breast cancer screening.
MWAPA also distributed food items such as rice, beans, garri, eggs, vegetable oil and ewedu to the participants.
