The Lancang-Mekong-Cambodia TCM Diagnosis, Treatment and Cultural Exchange Centre was opened on Tuesday.
The centre, located within the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital in Phnom Penh, promotes Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Cambodia, Southeast Asia and countries along the Belt and Road.
“The centre was established to promote the culture of traditional Chinese medicine and give the public a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of TCM treatment,” Than Sokun, director of the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital, told Xinhua after the ceremony.
“Cambodian patients have confidence in the effectiveness of TCM diagnosis and treatment,” he said. “By combining TCM with modern medicine, the effectiveness of treatment has increased.”
Sokun said China has sent a traditional Chinese medicine medical support team to the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital since March 2022 to help Cambodia fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
To date, two groups of TCM medical support teams have completed missions in Cambodia, providing free medical checkups and treatment and holding short-term TCM training courses for hundreds of local medical workers.
“TCM is becoming increasingly popular in Cambodia due to its effectiveness in treating a variety of ailments,” he said. “In just over two years, more than 20,000 Cambodians have received TCM treatment.”
TCM includes therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and therapeutic Tuina massage. It has been used effectively to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses.
“The significance of this event is to promote the culture of traditional Chinese medicine in Cambodia and countries along the Belt and Road,” Liu Zhen, director of Guang’anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, told Xinhua.
The centre will provide diagnosis, treatment, education and scientific research in traditional Chinese medicine for the Cambodian people, he said, adding that it will make a significant contribution to improving the country’s medical standards.
Prior to the opening ceremony of the center, a symposium was held between the Cambodia-China Friendship Hospital and China’s Guang’anmen Hospital to review the achievements made so far and set an action plan for future cooperation.
