As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, it is becoming increasingly clear that another crisis is looming: a mental health pandemic.
From April 15th, Third Age Learning Lakehead will be hosting a five-part lecture series, ‘The Current Mental Health Pandemic’, examining the current mental health crisis. From exploring the biopsychosocial/medical model of serious mental illness to considering the role of resilience in coping with crisis, these five of his talks shed light on the complex world of mental health. .
The series begins with Dr. Tanya Shute, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University. She leverages her extensive experience working with community mental health/problem substance use/homelessness to facilitate some introductory content from the biopsychosocial/medical model of severe mental illness/diagnosis .
On April 24, Heidi Stanley explores the field of addiction and suggests that our own biases influence the way addiction is talked about. Heidi will discuss how communities can better support individuals on their journey to improving their mental health by changing their own perspectives.
