Kyren Wilson grabbed snooker’s holy grail after seeing off Jack Jones in the World Championship final.
The 32-year-old defeated the Welshman 18 frames to 14 in a thrilling match tonight (May 6).
It was always a question of when, not if, the Northamptonshire potter would taste glory at the sport’s top table. The margin was close in 2020, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, only a small number of supporters turned out at the Crucible, and he suffered a crushing defeat to Ronnie O’Sullivan.
The contrast between him lifting the famous World Championship trophy could not have been more stark than during that harrowing period. The sting of that defeat is a motivation for Wilson, 32, as well as his snooker-obsessed sons Finley, eight, and Bailey, six.

Naturally, they take precedence over his snooker. Before the tournament he said: “I want to have a season where I can contribute to the world. When it comes to the Crucible, I’m a different player and a different person.
“But it’s hard to maintain that all year long when young children chase you out the door saying, ‘Don’t go.’ I have to give them my time, but my I think there’s a point in my career where they’re not as dependent on me.

“Then, as selfish as it may sound, you can become a professional snooker player. I have a very understanding wife.” [Sophie] Who wants that for me too? Maybe we’ll see that in a few years. ”
In addition to the inspiration provided by his family, Wilson has also been encouraged by hypnosis and salmon.
After his victory over David Gilbert in the semi-finals, he joked, “If I ate a lot of salmon, my gills would get bigger.” “I’ve been working with some people and helping them with things.
“I’ve been working on the mental side. I’ve been working with Chris O’Connor, a resolution hypnotherapist. We started just before the World Championships. We talk almost every day.
“Just empty your stress bucket. We all have events that can affect our daily work lives. It allows us to go out and feel more free. Ta.
“Our minds are filled with all sorts of things that don’t need to be there. If we can eliminate them and just focus on snooker, the game becomes a lot easier. I slept well during this tournament and , he knocked me out.”
By his own admission, Wilson wasn’t having his best season before arriving in Sheffield, but that doesn’t really matter now as he basks in the glory of becoming snooker’s world champion. With a big chance on his hands, it would be brave to bet on him winning more big titles over the next 10 years.
