Something a dermatologist told me back when I was a young beauty editor has stayed with me: the average person only needs three products in their daily routine: a good sunscreen, retinol, and vitamin C. Vitamin C, they said, does pretty much everything you generally need. The antioxidant protects the skin from environmental stressors like air pollution, reduces pigmentation, and gives the skin an overall glow. That said, vitamin C is finicky, so finding a good one can be hard. Vitamin C is notoriously unstable and prone to degradation, and sometimes it can be too strong and sensitive to the skin. This product from Klairs, the OG of our beauty columnist Rio Biera-Newton’s famous skincare Google doc, is particularly good for sensitive skin and beginners because of its low concentration. “If you’re thinking about trying a vitamin C serum for the first time and you’re not quite sure how your skin will react, this is a great place to start,” she says. In addition to ascorbic acid, it’s also formulated with Centella asiatica extract, which supports the skin’s barrier function and reduces redness and inflammation, and yuzu fruit, which is packed with natural vitamin C. It’s currently on sale at Soko Glam for 30 percent off as part of their Fourth of July sale, and it’s also on sale at Ulta .
