The goals of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program are to:
• Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables for optimal health
• Increase direct sales of food in Kansas.
• Providing fresh, nutritious, uncooked, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from a farm stand to low-income seniors.
• Increasing domestic consumption of agricultural products by expanding or helping to expand domestic farmers’ markets.
• Developing or assisting in the development of new and additional farmers markets.
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a project of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. The program is coordinated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), which works with local partners to identify eligible seniors and distribute the checks.
