I went on an audiovisual experience this weekend and it got me thinking about how often we disconnect from so-called “real life” and focus on ourselves – our inner world, our connection with ourselves, others and most importantly, our connection with the Earth. Mesmerica XLit gave me some ideas and questions that I would never normally think about.
Mesmerica XL From the visionary mind of James Hood comes an all-new giant screen experience designed to relieve stress, unwind the mind and inspire a deep sense of relaxation. Mesmerica XL It invites us to escape the hustle and bustle of our busy lives and drift away into fascinating imaginary worlds on a grand new scale.
So, Hood seems to be saying, leave your worries at the front door and embark on a fantastic family-friendly (ages 6 and up) journey that explores the power of the mind.

To be honest, it wasn’t what I expected.
While the idea and proposal behind this was fascinating and some of the graphics used in the advert were brilliant, the execution was questionable at best.
The idea of connecting with your inner world, nature and everything around you is great. There were some guided meditation instructions which felt unnecessary and took away from the experience, but overall it was something that should have worked easily.
But that did not happen.
The music was interesting in places but repetitive and disappointing, and the graphics reminded me (and apparently other viewers) of computer screensavers and Windows Media visualizers from the ’90s.
Sometimes I was literally amazed by their beauty, other times I was mercilessly torn apart. Except for a handful of them, I had no idea what the real script or core concept behind them was. They had no special structure.
My guess is that this should be called an audiovisual guided meditation, although that’s not the best description. Might be It will feel familiar to those who already actively practice meditation and visualization.
Metaphorical depictions of the Earth, its elements and our inner worlds form the basis of the graphics, creating a dreamlike atmosphere with some relaxing and intimate scenes, helping us to stay connected and to practice awareness, reminding us to perceive with more than just our physical senses.
I never expected to experience something like this. I know this was a start for me, but I have to be firm in admitting the disappointing quality. Again, there were some beautiful moments, great images and immersive music (especially the music in the final sequence was great in my opinion), but it was just too raw and the overall experience was… questionable as I said before.
it is Mesmerica XL Worth it? I don’t know if I can say so. I’ll admit it did, because it reminded me to be more conscious of my emotions, my feelings, my connections, and my connections to what’s inside and outside of me. But the execution wasn’t as expected and was overall flawed.
That being said, I would love to find more kaleidoscopic or, as I have found more easily, fractal reality videos – there are possibilities for meditation and visualization there that I would love to explore.
Mesamerica XL is currently performing in Salt Lake City, Utah.
