Gen Z — This is the last straw.
This generation, born between 1997 and 2012, is obsessed with the latest viral beauty secret: anti-wrinkle straws, which many claim can turn back time. It continues to become.
Rather than drinking through a vertical straw, they sip through a hook-like device that prevents their lips from pursing, which is thought to result in fewer wrinkles.
However, experts say there is not enough data to prove the method is effective.
“There is no scientific evidence as to whether anti-wrinkle straws are an effective way to prevent perioral wrinkles, and the act of slightly pursing the lips is still implicated,” says Dr. Lear Cosmetics. Dr Lee Totton of the Skin Clinic told The Telegraph. .
“You would need to drink frequently through a regular straw to cause perioral wrinkles,” she added.
Doctors say wrinkles form from sun exposure, age-related loss of collagen, and smoking, but they’re not straws.
Another expert said that daily laughter and conversation also affect facial wrinkles.
“Will it help in the short term? Yes, as a slowdown, [aging] A little process can go a long way,” Dr Daniel Hunt, founder and director of Imperial Aesthetics, also told the Telegraph. “But do you think that in 30 years these causes of delineation will be dramatically reduced? No.”
He also suggested that simply minimizing the use of gadgets (for example, when going out for drinks on the weekend) “doesn’t help much.”
But that hasn’t stopped TikTokers from posting videos testing the “anti-wrinkle straw,” and clips about it have been viewed more than 350 million times.
However, some of the posters weren’t even sure if straws were that effective in combating nasolabial folds.
One TikToker named @bigg_sal posted a video about anti-wrinkle straws last year that has since garnered more than 600,000 views.
“I tried it. I think it’s okay,” she said after detailing the wrinkles she noticed around her mouth.
Another woman named Rachel Carlisle also shared her experience with straws.
“When I saw this, I was really confused about how to learn how to use it,” she said in the video.
“It looks really weird when you’re using it, but that is, if you can maintain a youthful look,” Carlisle added.
Commenters below her video laughed along with her at the awkwardness of using the device.
“Anti-wrinkle straws help me look younger, but I have a rare and incurable disease,” said one person.
“This seems to make my wrinkles worse and I’m confused,” said another.
Gen Z isn’t the only group advocating the use of straws.
The 54-year-old content creator, who goes by Cristina.Noh on TikTok, said she also uses a special straw to prevent aging. The number of views on a video she posted last year soared to 1.3 million.
The Post asked social media users for comment.
Dermatologist Totton says if people want to avoid aging, they should focus on wearing sunscreen, getting enough sleep and reducing alcohol intake and smoking habits, rather than obsessing over straws. That’s what he said.
