In today’s reactive care model, patients typically require a diagnosis before they can receive medical care. However, today’s patients are increasingly seeking information about how to avoid getting sick in the first place. This is where a proactive healthcare model comes in handy. This model aims not only to prevent the onset and progression of chronic diseases, but also to help patients avoid severe illness when they contract the disease.
Kathy Campbell, a pharmacist and patient advocate at Medicap Pharmacy in Owassa, Okla., and CEO of DrKathy Health, speaks to: drug topics Learn why wellness and proactive health are the future of pharmacy and how wellness-focused pharmacies are traditionally We discussed the unique value it offers compared to other models.
“Pharmacists are best suited to serve as intelligent, trained, and trusted resources for patients and communities to provide hands-on access to science and support to maintain health before they even become patients. I think so,” Campbell said. “That’s it. You don’t need a diagnosis. You don’t need a drug. I think that’s really the new model for pharmacy. It’s really something that’s in our hearts anyway. We’ve known for years, We don’t want people with these illnesses to be diagnosed with cancer.”
Campbell added that a health-focused model is valuable for pharmacies because pharmacists are trusted in the community and patients look to pharmacies for health advice.
“I think the value proposition for pharmacy in wellness is that we know a lot,” Campbell says. “We can help you, but the consumer doesn’t know it yet. The consumer knows me and trusts me, and they know I’ll give them the right information.” Because I trust them, I know they will be willing to invest in the products I sell.”
