Vitamin D and calcium supplements are very common. Both of these supplements are often prescribed to treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. According to the Cleveland Clinic, vitamin D and calcium help build and maintain bone health. Vitamin D also plays an important role in supporting the immune system and brain health.
Doctors often prescribe these supplements together, but research is mixed on whether the two can be taken at the same time.
According to a health report
A 2019 study found that taking calcium and vitamin D supplements together may increase the risk of stroke, but the authors were looking at previously published evidence on how supplements affect human health.
Other researchers stressed that taking calcium and vitamin D supplements in moderation is fine, especially for older adults, but taking too much of either supplement may not be beneficial.
Doctors also warn against taking too many vitamin D and calcium supplements. The safest amount of calcium an adult can get per day, whether from supplements or food and drink, is 2,500 mg. The upper limit for vitamin D for adults is 100 mcg per day, including food, drink, and supplements, according to a report in Health magazine.
