PM Modi’s 45-hour meditation in front of the cameras in Kanyakumari has been a hot topic ever since it was announced. With numerous photos and videos of his meditation circulating on social media, many are wondering: How easy is it for an ordinary person who also has a full-time job (albeit perhaps not as demanding as the PM) to attempt such a long meditation session in a healthy way? Does it require extensive preparation or is it something that can be attempted spontaneously? A yoga expert explains.
Regular yoga practice is a prerequisite
“Those who practice yoga regularly can attempt such long meditations if they feel it is really necessary. It is best to avoid attempting something prompted by the feats of others or trends on social media,” explains Jaiji VG, an instructor at Samagra Yoga Institute, a coaching institute. If attempted suddenly, it would become clear within a few minutes that it would not be easy to sustain, he says. “It is better to attempt long meditations only after training under a guru and understanding the principles well. Otherwise, some people experience hallucinations. People need to understand that simply closing their eyes for 45 minutes is not meditation,” he explains. Practicing Anulom Vilom Pranayama, which regulates the breath and frees oneself from the noise around you, can help you meditate in a calm state of mind, adds Jaiji.
According to Dr Rajesh Kumar Singh, national vice-president of the Indian Association of Naturopathic and Yoga Graduate Doctors, one needs to ensure that one’s health is in tip-top condition before taking up meditation and it is not recommended for those prone to depression. At the same time, age cannot be a judge of health, says Jaiji. “It’s about attitude. You’ve seen a 30-year-old man and a 60-year-old,” he asks.
Training and Nutrition
Keeping your body healthy is also necessary to prepare for long meditation sessions. According to Jaiji, yoga sessions should be combined with exercises that straighten and strengthen the spine and various other exercises that give flexibility to the legs. As for diet, you should plan to eat light meals so that you do not put too much strain on your digestive system.
