An Irish food blogger in the US has come up with a tasty recipe to make the traditional Memorial Day burger even tastier. With the US national holiday fast approaching, as well as the Irish bank holiday, what better way to mark the day than by preparing a feast.
The sun may not be shining in Ireland over the next few days as expected in many parts of the US, but people can still dust off their barbecue grills and whip up some slider bars from Gillian Faulkner Niswonger, from County Antrim.
The 55-year-old moved to the United States in 1993 and currently lives in Washington state with her husband and two children. In 2022, she launched the cooking website “Prepare and Serve,” which features easy-to-make Irish recipes, and it has become a huge hit.
“I posted a how-to guide for making slider bars,” Jillian says. “Instead of eating one big burger, you can eat more than one of the smaller sliders with a variety of tasty condiments.”
“These seasonings make this slider bar unique and taste just amazing. These gourmet slider bars are a crowd pleaser, so as soon as the sun starts shining, fire up the grill and start munching away!”
How to create a slider bar
bread
The size of the bun should correspond to the size of the beef patty, so choose a bun with a smaller diameter than a standard burger size.
Yeast-based rolls are the most common type of bread used for slider bars. If it doesn’t come sliced, slice it. A flour roll or a large lettuce leaf is also a good alternative to traditional bread.
seasoning
- Onion Chutney
- Chunk Blue Cheese Dressing
- Pickled mustard seeds
- Baconnaise – bacon and mayonnaise.
- Cherry Tomato Jam – A delicious alternative to tomato ketchup
Beef patty
You can make your own beef patty or buy a pre-made one from the grocery store or butcher. Whatever you choose, make sure the patty is the same size as the bun or slightly smaller.
For best results, sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides and grill or cook over an open flame. Use a digital thermometer to check that the beef patties reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
Other meat patties can be used as well, such as bison, venison, pork, or any kind of meat combination.
Additional materials
- Lettuce. Romaine is the best in Jillian’s opinion.
- Tomatoes – Round beefsteak tomatoes are ideal for serving at slider bars and are considered the best in both taste and size.
- Pickles – Bread and butter pickles, gherkin pickles, or hamburger pickles are vegetable accompaniments
- Onions – When serving raw onions, sliced or diced sweet or red onions work best.
- Sides – Recommended options include Caesar salad, pasta pesto salad, potato salad and coleslaw.
