The Roanoke Chowan Foundation was first established as a public foundation in 1985 with a cash surplus ($3 million) from Roanoke Chowan Hospital. An additional $4.6 million was transferred from Roanoke Chowan Hospital, bringing the total to $7.6 million.
The Foundation held its first meeting on December 5, 1985 with its five-member Board of Directors and the RC Alliance President.
In 1997, 11 new officers were added after the hospital’s reorganization with Pitt County Memorial/East Carolina Health. The Roanoke Chowan Foundation has been reorganized to create a private foundation whose mission is “the health and well-being of the people of the Roanoke Chowan region.”
RCF is now a completely independent organization from ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
The Foundation’s original assets were $7.6 million, which over the years have grown to $17.3 million through wise investments and careful management and stewardship by the Board of Directors.
According to its bylaws, the foundation is required to donate 5 percent of its corpus every year.
The following criteria were adopted to guide grant allocation:
Wellness has a special interest in “medical model systems” for restoring health and maximizing healthy lifestyles.
Health, with its focus on education, recreation, and economic factors, directly impacts the quest for healthier, more productive communities.
The Foundation’s first distribution occurred in 1999 and saw the vision of a Roanoke Chowan Regional Health and Wellness Center serving a diverse population become a reality. Viquest, now ECU Health, opened his practice in 2001.
Since the opening of ECU Health, the Roanoke Chowan Foundation has continued to invest in the Health and Wellness Center to ensure quality programs, which in turn have a significant impact on the health of our members. Therefore, everyone who is a member receives a grant from the Roanoke Chowan Foundation’s endowment to ensure affordability and access.
Elsewhere in the local area, grants from the foundation will address health and wellness scholarships, car seat safety, childhood asthma, diabetes, dental care, mobile medical units, and health and safety issues for younger populations. Programs and services such as emergency home repair are available. – Income families, farm-to-home nutrition programs, cancer care, medical transportation, chronic disease management, breastfeeding, flood and tornado victim assistance, school health and wellness centers, health navigators, and digital health literacy.
The Foundation is interested in receiving high-quality applications that address health, wellness, and the social determinants of health. We welcome creativity that brings new health and wellness impact program ideas to the Roanoke Chowan area.
Applications are accepted on April 1, July 1, and September 1 of each year through the grants portal located on the website RoanokeChowanFoundation.org. Those interested in applying for a grant are encouraged to discuss their ideas in advance with Wendy Vann, president of the RC Foundation (PresidentRCF@outlook.com).
