The Iowa Medical Board highlighted an alarming incident involving an acupuncture patient who was left behind and had to seek help from law enforcement.
Acupuncture horror stories
On June 12, 2023, a male patient visited the office of licensed acupuncturist Xiaodong “Dave” Wang in Rock Rapids, Iowa, according to public records and a Lyon County Sheriff’s Office report. After inserting the needle into the patient’s body, Wang reportedly left the clinic, went home and fell asleep.

Feeling left in a vulnerable position, the patient removed the needle himself and called the sheriff’s office for help. Deputies noted that the patient waited an hour and a half for Wang to return and tried unsuccessfully to contact Wang by phone before calling law enforcement for help.

Acupuncturist punished
As a result of this incident, the medical board charged Mr. Wang with professional incompetence for failing to meet the standard of care expected of an acupuncturist. The commission resolved the case with a warning and fined Mr. Wang $500. The agreement was signed in January but was only recently made available to the public. Mr. Wang chose not to comment on the matter.
Wang was originally issued a license by the medical board in 2018, and that license is set to expire in October.
